October horoscope by Hannah Crerar
September starts off at a steady pace and our minds feel sharp but as the month progresses, our sense of focus waivers. Some things will take more time than we had planned. Patience and hope are required.

A problem shared is a problem halved
With the Antipodean propensity to dogear a passport, our familial relationships inevitably change. Bound together at first by living quarters and later by relatively tight geography, the big migration to distant lands adds an element to relationships that, till then, have stayed alive with the help of physical closeness.
Every reason not to watch He’s All That
I would like to alert the authorities to a murder that I have witnessed. The victim: 1999 rom-com she’s all that. Yes, there are bigger problems in the world, but I strongly believe that remakes of classic films should be illegal. There should be an unspoken rule that you don’t step on hallowed grounds, especially if you’re going to butcher it. Netflix… I’m talking to you.
Trauma to advocacy with Millie Grant
Oh trauma, you seem to consume my existence. You left a nasty invisible scar on my brain and now demand my full attention. You leave me no choice but to reluctantly oblige your demands. Forcing me to accept and journey through my trauma to navigate myself a new safe path. I’m from Christchurch so like all the roads here, mine has some bumps in the way.
The sweetest treats with My Croatian Kitchen
I'm Helena, a New Zealand born Croatian who's been brought up with food as a central point of my culture, family and community. This is everything I don’t know about grief
I never knew death before my twenties. I’d never lost anyone before then. I think I started to believe that death as a concept was something stigmatised. My inner realist understands that death is ever approaching the longer we live, with the more risks we take. I guess I had it in my head, a form of acceptance; death is inevitable. I’ve been fortunate in my youth to have held onto every single one of my extended family members, every single one of my close friends.
The burden of representation is real, and a heavy one at that
That baggage is so heavy that it effectively hinders your ability to perfect your craft and produce your art. When you’re a person of colour trying to produce art, so much of your time is spent networking, lifting people within your community up, fighting your industry against discrimination, proving that your deserve a spot at the table, and carrying the burden of representation for your people.
My top podcasts are all hosted by drag queens
Over 155 million people listened to a podcast every week in 2020. I was one of those people. They say you can learn a lot about a person by looking at their bookshelf. I’d say the same goes for their podcast library.

Sauce’s delicious dumpling soup
Soup is notoriously underrated. But for many, soup - homemade soup - is a representation of warmth, of home.
Personally, I love everything about it.
