Yana's guide to a weekend in Wellington Pōneke

With Visa Wellington on a Plate coming up in August I thought it was time to put together a guide to some of my favourite spots around the capital. My credentials: a sweet treat connoisseur and a window-shopping addict.

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK

Customs

I’ve had many discussions about where to get the best coffee in Pōneke and Customs seems to be a crowd favourite. Nothing compares to the thrill of desperately trying to get an outside table here on a Saturday morning. The toast served until 2pm is as good as the coffee, plus lots of pastries to pick from. Great spot for people watching too. There is a Recycle Boutique store adjacent to the cafe for some mindful post-breakfast shopping.

Swimsuit

Great music, tasty coffee and very cool employees (the kind that make you feel underdressed). There are a few locations, my favourite is on Dixon Street.

Pour & Twist

If you are after an Instagram-story-friendly drink, go here. To be completely honest, I get the iced strawberry matcha every time I come here but it never disappoints. The marmite and cheese toast is also good. Super cute location by Glover Park.

The Oatery

I haven’t been to The Oatery in a while but this used to be a go-to. A bowl of porridge is just what I feel like on a cold morning, which is every morning. The menu changes with every season so there are always fun new flavours to try. The spiced granola is baked weekly and is probably the best I’ve had.

Fred’s

I always end up going here when I’m in a rush and need to quickly grab some lunch. I’ve tried most of the sandwiches on the menu, which are all delicious. The beef roll is 10/10 but if you’re coming on a weekend you better get here early to try it. I also rate the Moore Wilson’s orange juice they serve.

1154

A classic for a reason. 1154 serves fresh house-made pasta and organic wine. The vegetarian options here are great and the Torta Cioccolato is a perfect way to finish your dinner. Btw they have $12 pasta 4-6 pm Monday through Thursday :)

The Ram

I <3 The Ram. Such a pleasant atmosphere with great music, a beautiful interior and attentive staff. They don’t take bookings so sometimes there is a little bit of a wait but it is worth it. The menu changes frequently so it’s tricky to recommend any specific dish but the tiramisu, which I hope won’t be leaving the menu anytime soon, is a must-try. Also, great value. I went on a Monday with a friend for their date-night special and left very full and happy.

Margot

Margot is a cosy bar and restaurant in Newtown. Out of this list, this venue serves the most exciting combinations of flavours. I remember coming here for their birthday last year and having the best tacos and a tostada with kingfish. I recommend booking a table in advance since the seating is limited. Margot would also make for a great date spot!

Kisa

Whenever anyone asks for a restaurant recommendation, this is the first place that comes to mind. Kisa is a safe option in the best way possible. Their menu is inspired by Turkish cuisine with lots of smoky, charred flavours. There are so many vegetarian options to pick from with fun sweet and savoury pairings.

Ascot

It may be a little difficult to find but it’s the only rooftop bar in Pōneke worth going to. I won’t give away too much, you will have to check it out for yourself. P.S. It might be tempting but don’t try to steal the wine glasses with dogs on them.

WHERE TO SHOP

Bizarre Bazaar

All the fashion girlies shop here. Best store everrrr with the coolest selection of pieces by small designers and crazy vintage. I’m convinced there is something here for everyone. When you first walk in, all the colour may be a little overwhelming in comparison to the sad beige of Wellington streets but you get used to it. There is also a cyberstore but it doesn’t compare to the eclectic atmosphere of brick and mortar. Some of my favourite designers stocked at BB include Roisin Dubh, Depth of Scye, Olivia Rowan and Sacreflux.

Sully’s

Bizarre Bazaar’s less eclectic sister. Another store with a wide range of high quality clothing, accessories as well as homeware and skincare. I believe they also have a preloved consignment section now. The jewellery here is everything, come see for yourself. My favourite designers carried by Sully’s include Collina Strada, Jess Grindell, Cawley, Rose Pickernell and Orswo.

Vessel

Cutest store tucked away on Victoria Street selling New-Zealand-made ceramics. Many unique and carefully crafted bowls, cups, plates and vases to choose from. My favourite makers include Karin Amdal and Louis Kittleson.

KAUKAU

On their website they describe themselves as “a visual narrative that ebbs and flows” and I think that is such a perfect way to put it. KAUKAU feels like more than just a store but a little world where contemporary art and design, quality materials and aesthetics are appreciated in a special way. The store carries a variety of products from socks to books. Some of my favourite designers and makers stocked here include Shannen Young, Buddy, Camille Paloma Walton and Max Walker.

Underlena

Underlena carries independent, impact-conscious lingerie brands from around the globe. All the styles are made to last and enhance the wearer’s sensuality, making this the perfect spot to visit if you want to feel like a princess. The showroom on Ghuznee Street is open on Fridays and Saturdays, or by appointment.
