Sauce x Viaduct Harbour presents Bombay Electric, a celebration
Bombay Electric is a creative endeavour that aims to reveal the true essence of belonging, community and self-love.
Sauce, in partnership with Viaduct Harbour, explores the concept of affiliation through acceptance, and integration within ourselves. We put our heads (and hearts) together to present a diasporic vision of electrifying individuals. In this brief moment in time, we reflect upon our own roots through the lens of five incredible South Asian creators, dreamers and magic makers. The theme throughout this project? Liberation and feeling emboldened to reclaim space in our most sacred moments.
As the creative director and founder of Aunty’s House, Amita Kala remains unequivocally self-assured about her self worth. What was once a life of assimilation and a fear of speaking up has now blossomed into an existence worthy of beauty and permissibility in every corner. “Representation is so important…in every single scope, because that’s really where the seed is planted”– Amita Kala, Founder and Creative. A vibrant part of what it means to be South Asian is to be part of a collective, communicating our needs and realising our potential. Sammy Saxton-Beer from Viaduct Harbour says in her view, this potential to organise and rally alongside one another comes down to having a good community database. “While allies play a crucial role, I’ve realised that building community can sometimes mean that you have to de-prioritise people from outside the community to first build strength and resilience from within, and that’s ok.”– Sammy Saxton-Beer, Viaduct Harbour. For Starving Artists Fund designer and maker, Natasha Ovely reflects, these questions surrounding our identity is a lifelong project, a journey that is steeped in a desire to belong but also stems from being in a constant state of flux, particularly for those who have emigrated from their original motherland. In many ways, Bombay Electric showcases the true significance of diversity within the South Asian community. It unveils the vibrancy of manifestation, the collection of our accolades and of course how galvanizing it is to break bread with each other. This is a project close to our hearts, a celebration of our unique and vibrant community, highlighting what makes our cultural architecture so strong, and in its truest essence the representation South Asian diaspora have so desperately fought long and hard for.
