Charlotte Moffat, I Like Your Style
What is “I like your style”? It’s the series in which we ask fashion lovers to share some of their favourite outfits and talk us through what inspires and influences the way they dress and shop. Then they nominate someone whose style they admire and so the style chain continues.
Charlotte Moffat is a multifaceted Kiwi model and an emerging photographer whom you may have seen on the pages of Australian magazines such as Russh, Elle or Sidenote last year. She not only has a striking look, but also a distinct and memorable personal style. Nominated by Yawynne Yem, Charlotte told us about where she shops, how modelling has influenced her outlook on style and what inspires her.
Who is Charlotte?
Char is a model, researcher and emerging photographer/image creator.
I studied a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Japanese, finishing my degree in Tokyo.
At the beginning of 2024, I decided to pursue creative endeavours and explore my creative potential. This landed me in Sydney working as a model, Research Officer and emerging photographer.
How would you describe your personal style in three words?
Elegant, grungy, Aotearoa.
Do you have any style icons or eras that influence your wardrobe?
Mid 2000s Kpop forever.
As a model you are often styled by others. Would you say this is a way to expand your personal taste? Is this something you draw inspiration from or do you look for it elsewhere?
I have recently been styled in incredible pieces I wouldn’t get to wear otherwise, like pieces held in museums and made by talented local designers (pictured below). I’m blessed to be surrounded by so much inspiration.
Being styled on shoots helps me figure out what I like and don’t like. I like observing a stylist’s creative choices and entering their world of perception.
However I would say the strongest influence on my style is riffing off media and culture (lol).
Are there any brands or designers you’re particularly drawn to?
I have 2 cats in me with very different energy.
One cat loves elegance, classic sillouhettes, boat necks and figure hugging jersey cotton. Brands like Jing He, All is a Gentle Spring, 2o2st and Wixii. Merino, cashmere, vintage rabbit and leather.
The other cat thinks it’s funny to wear Supre shorts, double layered jeans, LuluLemon, jandals with toe socks, platform crocs, and Warehouse sweats.
What’s the most unique or sentimental piece in your wardrobe?
My most recent unique purchase is my (Made in Australia) leather gentleman’s slippers. My most sentimental piece might be my boyfriend’s paint splattered jeans.
What’s your most iconic fashion moment to date?
My courts, leather and tiny shorts.
What’s your most embarrassing fashion moment to date?
I wore boxers to the club (a little embarrassing) and on a run in Sydney (more embarrassing ). Turns out men’s underwear still count as men’s underwear when I wear them.
What are some of your favorite places to shop in Sydney?
RTTS land, Alix Higgins, MgnJwl + TradeMe when I’m in NZ.
What’s that one special piece that you wish was a part of your wardrobe? Why?
I have just moved to London so I am looking for a fitted thick woollen pipe neck coat - almost like a uniform. And also pointy tall stiletto boots. I have been incubating and ruminating on these pieces for a couple of years. But yet to find.
Nominate someone you know for the next feature. Someone whose style you admire.
Henrietta Fisher - artist, model and my muse.
