Don’t miss out on the Viaduct Harbour and Auckland Pride’s showcase for Te Tīmatanga 2023

Curated by Kaiwhakahaere Hāmiora Bailey for Te Tīmatanga 2023, Viaduct Harbour proudly presents, in a partnership with Auckland Pride, a showcase by three takatāpui artists: Kahu Kutia, Te Kahureremoa Taumata and Tangaroa Paul. Honouring the mahi of Graham Tipene (of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei) and acknowledging their connection to the Waitematā, the artists were captured performing on Te Mata Topaki. Together the artists consider how they might honour the high tide in its capacity to bring us closer together as Māori, and “elevate” the collective practice & anamata. The collection of breathtaking performances include poetry, waiata, taonga pūoro and poi and have been filmed by Supernormal and released via Auckland Pride’s website.

Kahu Kutia is a multi-media storyteller hailing from Ngāi Tūhoe. Wahine reo Māori. Artist, activist, writer, producer. Her work aims to uplift unheard stories from te ao Māori.

Te Kahureremoa Taumata is a multi-disciplinary artist, writer, singer, composer, storyteller, tāonga pūoro practitioner, visual artist and video maker based in Te Whanga-nui-ā-Tara (Wellington). Her musical compositions have featured across many platforms including film, theatre, educational resources, art installations, and live performance.

Tangaroa Paul is a Poi expert. A PhD candidate & teacher at the Auckland University of Technology, Tangaroa is interested in Haka as a methodology of self actualisation. They identify as gender-fluid, not identifying with any fixed gender. Rather than ‘he’ or ‘she’ pronouns, Tangaroa has recently come to prefer the term ‘Irarere’, which translates to “gender-fluid” in te reo Māori.

2023 marks Bailey’s second year as kaiwhakahaere for Te Tīmatanga. In this interview, Bailey explains the inspiration behind this year's iteration.
