As an ode to one of Aotearoa's leading sculpturists, Stories of a Lost Land (2022) will be on display in Viaduct Harbour’s Market Square during the upcoming Aotearoa Art Fair for you to admire.
Sitting perched upon the flowering branches of the kōwhai tree are Paul Dibble's bold-bodied sculptors of the beautiful native huia. Figurative in nature, this particular sculptural work by Dibble follows the delicate flow of New Zealand's floral and bird-watching shapes. He uses a 24-carat gold sheet to replicate the essence of the opulent golden kōwhai, encapsulating the beauty and mythological significance of the now-extinct huia in a majestic bronze. Over the years, Paul Dibble's work has dabbled in themes of native flora and fauna, cultural history, architecture, and the human figure–a set of keys to the heart of Aotearoa's art. Among the last series of works produced in the artist's lifetime, Stories of a Lost Land (2022) is at once celebratory and reflective.
Dibble’s work will be on display in Market Square between Friday 5 – Friday 26 April.
