5 Things — February Edition

So, the holidays are officially over… a few long weekends are floating ahead of us but it seems to be the time to get back on track and kick 2020’s ass, amirite? In the best tradition of the 'New Year, New You' movement I thought we should tackle the new decade in style and watch, listen, eat and experience something that serves a slightly higher purpose rather than just pleasing our senses.

Don’t know how about you but I’m not ready to give up my intentions of being my best self and so I aim to surround myself with more self-educating content and less lovely fluff. Doesn’t necessarily mean that I won’t be watching some Love Island in between though (guilty) — especially since on the latest episode of ‘5 Things w/ Lynn Hershberg’ (produced by W Magazine) Charlize Theron admitted that she loves her reality TV and that the Bachelor gives her mind a good rest. I mean, if it’s good enough for Charlize, I don’t mind this guilty pleasure from time to time as well.

To watch
The firstborn of aApple TV+ is an total winner, meet The Morning Show

The Morning Show got me binge-watching until 6am — I simply couldn’t stop and go to bed without knowing what happened next and how it ended. This episode is the last one, then bed, I thought, but still kept going. Luckily, I was on holidays then and had time to catch up on my beauty sleep too. Anyway, the #MeToo inspired series follows a network trying to move forward from the allegations of sexual misconduct, facing its co-anchor of 15 years get fired from the show and the search of a new one. I won’t give you any spoilers but cannot skip mentioning that Jennifer Anniston has already won the show its first award as a female actor in drama series. Reese Witherspoon, Steve Carell and Billy Crudup’s games are spot on too.

To listen

A new and noteworthy restaurant, Forest

Starting as a pop-up dinner series, Forrest grew to become an Auckland Central restaurant that focuses not only on leaving these who came satisfied but also on the environment. To make sure their impact on climate change isn’t enormous, they aim to source the majority of ingredients locally — meaning the offering is most likely to be ever-changing and so we recommend not to waste your time and visit sooner rather than later.

To read
Something less predictable, the hidden life of trees: what they feel, how they communicate — Discoveries From A Secret World by Peter Wohlleben

It might seem not quite like your usual read, however, simply put, it’s fascinating. I came across it on my app called Bookmate and couldn’t resist finding out all the little secrets that trees carry. As a forester in Germany, the author of the book spent many years observing the way trees interact with each other before stating that they, in fact, have a social network of their own… just mind-blowing.

To experience
Yoga Nidra, the life-changing magic of not having enough sleep and doing just fine

As a unique, guided meditation that tricks your body into experiencing REM sleep phase without actually sleeping. My sceptic mind made me wear a wrist band to one of such sessions that confirmed it and showed me the graph, suggesting I had an hour of deep sleep. Centuries ago, Napoleon, was the one who practised this deep relaxation technique and found it helpful during the French Revolution years.

To listen
A witty and personal podcast by Sophia Bush, WORK IN PROGRESS

Being a strong believer that we all can simultaneously be a masterpiece and ‘work in progress’ in some sense, Bush talks to all sorts of people who inspire her to prove this theory of hers. The list of guests includes Sophia’s favourite college professor, former CIA officer and UN ambassador, Queer Eye’s beloved mentor Karamo Brown and many more, including her ex-roommates. Not to mention that Sophia’s voice is like it was meant to exist for podcasting and voice work.
